Why General Musharraf Is a Main Suspect in Benazirís Assassination?
Apparently Al Qaeda has issued an unofficial statement in which it has accepted the responsibility of Benazirís assassination.
Pakistanís Interior Ministry has also officially announced they have a proof of Al Qaeda and Talibanís hand in Benazirís assassination.
Most of the Pakistanis believe General Musharraf is behind Benazirís murder. It is he who orchestrated the attack which proved fatal and killed Benazir Bhutto.
Al Qaeda hates United States. In Pakistan, Al Qaeda hates general Musharraf who facilitated US attack on Afghanistan and who is helping United States to wipe out Al Qaeda.
Al Qaeda leadership many times openly appealed to the people of Pakistan to over throw general Musharraf and made several unsuccessful attempts on his life, which confirms Al Qaeda's hatred for him.
Benazir Bhutto was out there to over throw general Musharraf. With her growing popularity in Pakistani masses, her victory was becoming almost certain. Many surveys and estimates predicted her overwhelming victory along with Mian Nawaz Sharif in coming elections.
With every passing day and her growing appeal among the people of Pakistan and swelling crowds in her gatherings, general Musharraf was gradually getting nervous and restless.
A few weeks ago, while talking to foreign correspondent he expressed his frustration with Benazir. He said he did not know why she was becoming confrontational. His body language showed his discomfort and anguish with Benazir Bhutto.
Benazir Bhutto also expressed identical sentiments about general Musharraf. She said general Musharraf was a tough man to work with therefore she was not willing to work with him. She severed all dialogues with him.
Within last 8 years, we witnessed several examples when general Musharraf became frustrated with someone and then what he did to that person.
First example was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He legally tried to remove general Musharraf, instead of accepting termination, general Musharraf overthrew the Prime Minister, handcuffed him, humiliated him, jailed him and eventually sent him into exile to Saudi Arabia.
Then he became frustrated with Nawab Akbar Bugti of Balochistan. He went on national television and threatened Nawab Akbar Bugti to kill him with a bullet which Nawab wonít know who fired it and where it came from. Later, he made his threat good and actually killed Nawab Akbar Bugti. He was so callous and ruthless, Instead of handing over his dead body to his family members, he buried it under heavy guard without anyone taking a look at it.
Lately, general Musharraf became frustrated with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
He called Chief Justice to his military house on March 9, demanded a resignation from him, upon refusal he detained Chief Justice for next 5 hours. He humiliated Chief Justice and put him under house arrest. Afterwards, law enforcement personnel pulled Chief Justiceís lots, tore his jacket and threw him on ground. How a petty official could give this kind of treatment to Chief Justice? Obviously, general Musharraf ordered them to teach a lesson to the Chief Justice.
General Musharraf has proved it over and over, that he cannot stand a threat to his power. Anyone who becomes a possible threat to his power, he eliminates him one way or the other.
When judiciary became a threat to his power, he imposed emergency in the country and fired 70 % of Supreme Court and High Court Judges and put them under house arrest. Those judges are still under house arrest even after the emergency has been lifted.
Benazir and Nawaz Sharifís sure shot overwhelming victory in coming elections was a serious threat to general Musharrafís power.
He terminated 70 % judges, but he had no recourse to deal with emerging threat of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.
To get red of them, his men tried to kill both Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. His assassins succeeded in killing Benazir Bhutto, but Nawaz Sharif escaped when his 6 workers were gunned down.
Benazir herself pointed finger towards Musharraf in an email to her lobbyist and friend Mark Siegel. She sent this email to Mark Siegel about a month ago. She requested Mark Siegel to pass on this email to Wolf Blitzer of CNN in case she is assassinated.
Al Qaeda was going to gain nothing by killing Benazir Bhutto. She was not going to be a bigger threat to Al Qaeda than general Musharraf. Then why they would kill Benazir Bhutto. Particularly, when she was about to throw general Musharraf out of power -- Al Qaeda's main wish.
By killing Benazir Bhutto, general Musharraf eliminated an up coming threat to his power.
If people look at a general Musharraf as a main suspect in Benazirís assassination, they have good reasons for it.
